Microsoft has announced plans to eliminate the notorious “blue screen of death” feature from Windows computers, replacing it with a new black-colored screen that will reduce reboots and improve the user experience. The company claims that the new screen will appear during “unexpected restarts” and is expected to roll out later this summer on all Windows 11 devices using the 24H2 operating software.
The new screen will feature simplified dialogue and will reboot computers in under two seconds for most users. The move is part of Microsoft’s effort to streamline the unexpected restart experience, as announced in a recent blog post.
Interestingly, variations of the “blue screen of death” have been used since the early 1990s, with different versions introduced over the years. In 2021, a new black screen was introduced for Windows 11 users, featuring updated dialogue. The infamous blue screen made headlines last July when a massive outage caused by CrowdStrike affected technology worldwide and displayed the blue screen on affected machines.
The decision to ditch the “blue screen of death” comes as Microsoft continues to improve and refine its operating system. With the new black screen option set to roll out, users can expect a smoother and more efficient user experience.
