Europe Braces for Record-Breaking Heat Wave

A severe heat wave is gripping Europe, with southern countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece expected to face temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). High temperatures will affect the entire Mediterranean region, from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkans.

Spain’s AEMET state weather service has forecast temperatures of up to 43 C in Andalusia, with medical emergency staff warning of a surge in heatstroke cases among vulnerable populations. Portugal is also expected to see temperatures over 40 C, prompting fire warnings for northern inland areas and coastal regions.

A wildfire in Greece has triggered evacuations south of Athens, where firefighters are battling the blaze using coast guard ships and helicopters. France is experiencing its 50th national heat wave since 1947, with several regions under high-temperature alert.

To stay safe during these extreme temperatures, EU residents are advised to remain indoors from about 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., though little cooling is expected at night over the next week. As scientists attribute the increasing frequency of heat waves to human-induced climate change, early summer heat waves were once more common before.

European countries are bracing for what could be the hottest start to Wimbledon ever seen, but temperatures in other regions may surpass even this record.
