Facebook’s New Photo Suggestion Feature Raises Concerns About Data Use

Facebook is now allowing users to automatically suggest AI-edited versions of their photos, including ones that haven’t been uploaded yet. When creating a new Story on the app, a screen pops up asking if the user wants to allow “cloud processing” to generate creative suggestions.

To work, Facebook will upload media from your camera roll to its cloud based on information like time, location, or themes. The feature allows Meta’s AI to analyze your photos and facial features, including those that haven’t been uploaded yet.

Users must agree to Meta’s AI Terms of Service by tapping “Allow” to opt-in. This allows Facebook to use the date, presence of people or objects in your photos to craft its creative ideas.

The feature is currently being tested in the US and Canada, but its introduction has raised concerns about data use. While users can turn off the feature at any time, some worry that sharing personal media with AI providers like Meta could give companies an advantage in the AI race.

In 2024, Meta’s AI Terms changed to allow the company to analyze images shared on Facebook and Instagram, raising questions about whether photos stored on your camera roll also count as shared data.
