Drinking Affects Men’s Sperm Quality Too

Researchers have found that men’s alcohol habits can negatively impact sperm quality and fetal development more than previously thought. In a groundbreaking study published in the journal Andrology, scientists discovered that even after four weeks without drinking, men’s sperm still show signs of impaired quality.

The study involved exposing male mice to alcohol for 10 weeks and then taking it away for four weeks. Despite stopping alcohol consumption, the mice’s sperm continued to be negatively affected. According to Professor Michael Golding, a researcher on the project, a father’s sperm quality is impacted by drinking even during the withdrawal process, which takes longer than previously thought.

The study highlights the importance of men being involved in the conversation about their drinking habits during pregnancy and conception. It also emphasizes that stopping alcohol consumption at least three months before trying to conceive may be necessary to improve sperm quality. The researchers hope this discovery will encourage men to reduce or abstain from drinking to protect their fertility and unborn child’s health.
