The Toronto Maple Leafs are in discussions with the Vegas Golden Knights about a sign-and-trade deal involving star forward Mitch Marner. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Nicolas Roy could be sent to the Maple Leafs if both sides can agree on terms.
Marner has a no-movement clause and would need to agree to be dealt to Vegas. Completing a sign-and-trade could extend his contract to eight years, exceeding the seven-year mark he’d face as a free agent.
This is not the first time the teams have discussed a deal involving Marner. However, Toronto’s request for Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore derailed talks last off-season.
Marner had an impressive regular season, recording 102 points and 75 assists in 82 games. He added 13 points in the playoffs.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said earlier this year that Marner’s departure was likely, suggesting he’d hit the market unless a significant change occurred.
