The 2025 Bootid meteor shower is set to peak on June 27, offering stargazers a chance to witness shooting stars in the night sky. Here’s what you need to know about this annual shower.
Every day, around 48.5 tons of ancient debris collide with our planet’s atmosphere, leaving behind stunning trails that can be visible to the naked eye. As Earth passes through the debris shed by comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke, it triggers periods of heightened activity called ‘meteor showers’.
The Bootid meteor shower is active from June 22 to July 2 and is expected to reach its peak on June 27. During this time, shooting stars associated with the comet can be observed emanating from a point in the constellation Bootes.
However, stargazers shouldn’t set high expectations for this shower. The American Meteor Society describes it as a ‘Class III’ variable meteor shower, which can produce strong activity on rare occasions but also may only produce one visible meteor per night.
To increase your chances of spotting meteors, look around 40 degrees away from the radiant in the direction of the local zenith. Use a smartphone stargazing app to pinpoint the constellation Bootes and find your ideal viewing spot.
The Bootid meteor shower is expected to be at its highest before sunset on June 27, making it an optimal time to search for meteors. With Earth approaching its new moon phase, a dark sky will provide the perfect conditions to spot these fleeting visitors.
