Thousands gathered in Belgrade, Serbia’s capital, to protest against President Aleksandar Vucic amid calls for an early election. The protests follow eight months of demonstrations over the fatal roof collapse in Novi Sad that killed 16 people. Critics blame alleged corruption and negligence behind the tragedy.
Police fired tear gas as protesters demanded an end to Vucic’s 12-year rule, with many calling on police to stop intervening. Despite Prime Minister Milos Vucevic’s resignation earlier this year, Vucic remains in power.
The protests were organized by university students who have driven nationwide demonstrations. Serbia’s railway company halted train service over a bomb threat allegedly aimed at preventing people from attending the rally.
Vucic denied foreign involvement behind the protest and warned that “thugs will face justice.” However, his hold on power has been shaken, with opponents accusing him of ties to organized crime, violence against rivals, and curbing media freedoms.
