Israel’s Food Aid Scheme in Gaza Is a “Death Trap”

A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Gaza as thousands of Palestinians are forced to choose between starvation or risking their lives for meager amounts of aid from the Israeli-US food distribution scheme. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has reported a sharp increase in patients with gunshot wounds due to frequent violence and attacks at aid distribution sites.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, operating under a proxy name, is distributing small quantities of food supplies to four locations, which are difficult to access for women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. This system forces Palestinians to walk long distances, fight for scraps, and risk being killed or wounded in the process.

MSF emergency coordinator Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa described the distribution sites as “the size of football fields surrounded by watch points, mounds of earth, and barbed wire.” The system is a “slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid,” and it must be immediately dismantled to prevent further harm.

The Israeli authorities’ deliberate tactic of food deprivation has led to a complete violation of international humanitarian law. Reports indicate that people wounded at aid distribution sites are dying from their injuries before receiving treatment.

Humanitarian principles dictate that aid should be delivered in large quantities, with dignity and respect for those who need it most. The people of Gaza urgently require the re-establishment of a genuine aid system and a sustained ceasefire to address the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes.
