Iran Releases Death Toll from Israel’s Evin Prison Attack Amid Ceasefire Skepticism

Iran has released the death toll from last week’s attack on its Evin prison, a notorious facility where many political prisoners and dissidents have been held. The country reported at least 71 deaths, including staff members, soldiers, prisoners, and a bystander.

Human rights groups have confirmed the death toll, which includes at least 35 staff members and two inmates. Others killed were a person walking in the prison vicinity and a woman who went to meet a judge about her imprisoned husband’s case.

The attack on the prison, which targeted “regime targets and government repression bodies,” raised concerns from rights groups about the safety of inmates. It remains unclear why Israel attacked the facility, but it came during a period of heightened tensions between the two countries.

Over the past 12 days, Israel claimed to have killed around 30 Iranian commanders and 11 nuclear scientists, while hitting eight nuclear-related facilities and more than 720 military infrastructure sites. More than 1,000 people were killed, including at least 417 civilians.

In response to the attack, Iran fired over 550 ballistic missiles at Israel, with some causing damage and killing 28 people. Iranian officials have raised suspicions about whether Israel will adhere to its ceasefire agreement, and have prepared for a potential surprise attack.

The international community is still awaiting clarity on the extent of damage to Iran’s nuclear program, which was the initial target of the Israeli strike. The US President has claimed that the program was “obliterated,” while Iranians say this is an exaggeration.
