Microsoft Veteran Dev Calls Xbox’s Future into Question

A former Xbox developer has expressed her concerns about the future of Microsoft’s gaming console business. In a YouTube video, Fryer criticized the company’s hardware plans, particularly the ROG Xbox Ally handheld, which she claims lacks substance.

Fryer believes that Xbox’s marketing strategy, known as “Xbox Anywhere,” is more style than substance. The campaign showcases various platforms where Xbox games can be played, but Fryer argues that this doesn’t necessarily mean the company will deliver on its promises. She also doubts the ROG Ally’s ability to compete with existing portable options like the Steam Deck.

The Xbox veteran expressed disappointment and sadness about the state of the gaming console market, feeling that Microsoft is abandoning its hardware business altogether. According to Fryer, the partnership between Xbox and ROG Ally is a “slow exit” from hardware production.

Fryer’s comments are not the first to suggest that Xbox may abandon its console business in favor of software and Game Pass offerings. However, Microsoft has denied these claims, and the company is still working on the follow-up to the Xbox Series X/S.

Microsoft was founded in 1975 and is led by CEO Satya Nadella. The company’s subsidiaries include Activision Blizzard, Mojang Studios, and various game studios. Xbox consoles have been released since 2001, and the latest series includes the Xbox Series X|S.
