Spain Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave

A severe heatwave has been sweeping across Spain since Saturday, June 28, with temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F) in many areas. According to the national weather agency, AEMET, this episode is unusually early and may last through Wednesday, July 2, possibly longer in some regions.

The extreme peaks are expected, particularly in Andalusia, where temperatures could reach as high as 44°C (111°F). In Madrid, Toledo, and Zaragoza, highs will hover around 40°C. The Mediterranean coast and southern areas will experience oppressive nights with temperatures not dropping below 25°C (77°F).

Health authorities have classified over 7,000 municipalities into three categories: high-risk zones (14%), medium-risk zones (21%), and low-risk zones (40%). Seville, hosting the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development from June 30 to July 3, is under added pressure due to the heatwave.

Reinforced security measures have been implemented, with health services on alert to respond to potential heat-related emergencies. Over 50 heads of state and government officials, along with 4,000 participants from civil society and international financial institutions, will attend the conference in Andalusia’s capital city.
