The six-episode Disney+ show follows Riri Williams, the protagonist played by Dominique Thorne, as she returns to her hometown after being expelled from MIT.
Riri’s character was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and has been developed further for this series. She inherits Tony Stark’s technical prowess but lacks his wealth and resources, making her reliance on fundraising a pragmatic issue. This sets the stage for a story that prioritizes personal stakes over fantastical elements.
The show features a diverse cast, including Anji White as Riri’s mother Ronnie and Anthony Ramos as Parker Robbins, the leader of a local heist crew. The casting pays homage to Chicago and its culture, with Shea Coulée playing hacker Slug in a nod to her hometown roots.
However, the show struggles to balance its multiple storylines, often juggling too many themes at once. Riri’s backstory, including the loss of her stepfather and best friend, adds emotional weight but is occasionally overshadowed by the plot’s complexities. The show’s second half takes a messy turn, setting up a potential sequel rather than resolving the current season.
Despite its flaws, Ironheart has a compelling narrative about the limitations of genius and the power of community. With its focus on Riri’s personal journey, it provides a refreshing change from the typical MCU fare.
