New COVID-19 Variant ‘Nimbus’ Spreads in US, Causing Severe Sore Throat

A new COVID-19 variant, “Nimbus” (NB.1.8.1), has emerged in the US and is now the dominant strain, making up 37% of current cases. Detected in at least 22 countries, it’s classified as a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization.

The Nimbus variant has been reported in 17 US states, including California, New York, Illinois, and Hawaii. However, Louisiana is not currently among the affected states. The CDC warns that the variant poses a low global threat, but current vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness and hospitalization.

Symptoms of Nimbus include body aches, congestion, cough, fatigue, fever or chills, headache, loss of smell, loss of taste, runny nose, shortness of breath, sore throat (often described as “razor blade” painful), nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and more. The variant is similar to the Omicron strain but has a more severe sore throat.
