Malik Beasley, a guard for the Detroit Pistons, is under investigation by federal authorities over allegations of gambling related to NBA games and prop bets. The accusations stem from the 2023-24 season, when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks.
According to sources, a prominent U.S. sportsbook noticed heavy betting interest on Beasley’s statistics beginning in January 2024. In one game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 31, 2024, the odds on Beasley recording fewer than 2.5 rebounds shifted significantly due to surge of action on the under.
Beasley finished with six rebounds, and the bets deemed unusual lost. His attorney, Steve Haney, described the investigation as not a charge and stated that his client has not been charged with anything.
The Pistons are aware of the investigation and have paused contract talks with Beasley, who was in talks for a three-year, $42 million deal. The NBA is also cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation.
This marks the latest development in Beasley’s career, which has been marked by suspensions and guilty pleas related to unrelated issues. He has played for several teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Pistons.
The NFL also faces a similar issue of gambling scandals.
