Israel Attacks Evin Prison in Tehran, Killing 71 People

Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran’s notorious Evin Prison in Tehran on Monday, killing at least 71 people, according to Iranian judiciary news outlet Mizan.

The victims include prison staff, conscripted soldiers, inmates, family members of prisoners, and neighbors living near the prison. The Israeli military targeted the facility without providing any clear motive for the attack.

Critics have long accused security forces at the Evin detention center of human rights abuses, with many political activists, journalists, and musicians among those who have been imprisoned there.

French citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris were also put in danger during the attack, which was part of a 12-day exchange of strikes between Israel and Iran. The couple had been held hostage since May 2022 after being accused of espionage.

A ceasefire was announced late on Monday, following the deadly attack that highlighted the ongoing tensions between the two countries.
