Inter Miami suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in their Club World Cup last-16 tie. The MLS club was outclassed by Europe’s recent Champions League winners in the first half, going in 4-0 down before halftime.
However, Lionel Messi’s return to the pitch helped spark a much-needed second-half improvement for Inter Miami. Despite no further goals being scored, PSG progressed to the quarter-finals after overcoming their opponents.
Coach Javier Mascherano described the first half as a “bloodbath,” acknowledging that his team was out of its depth against the dominant European side. However, he praised his players’ resolve and effort in the second half, which showed glimpses of what they can achieve in MLS.
Despite the disappointing result, Mascherano remained proud of his team’s performance and acknowledged that they had set realistic goals for themselves. He also acknowledged the challenge posed by PSG but offered no solutions to bridge the gap between MLS and European teams.
The loss marked a significant setback for Inter Miami, but Mascherano is focused on using their experience to improve in domestic competitions going forward.
