A busy week at the International Space Station (ISS) got underway on Monday, with a trio of research projects, vision checks, and routine tasks taking center stage.
Pharmaceutical researcher Nichole Ayers led an investigation into protein behavior in fluids using surface tension to minimize interactions with solid walls. The study aims to create better models for predicting complex fluid behavior, benefiting pharmaceutical manufacturing and 3D printing on Earth and in space.
Regular eye exams were conducted by NASA Flight Engineer Jonny Kim and Roscosmos’ Kirill Peskov, who swapped roles reading characters off a standard eye chart to assess their vision and peripheral vision. These checks are crucial for detecting potential space-related symptoms.
The crew also resumed filming training videos for future crews, showcasing the station’s systems and operations. Jonny Kim and Station Commander Takuya Onishi of JAXA captured footage of spacesuits and equipment storage areas, while Peskov filmed his crewmates conducting daily tasks, including research and exercise.
Veteran cosmonaut Sergey Ryzhikov worked on maintaining the Elektron oxygen generator and reorganizing stowage space in the Zarya module. Newcomer Alexey Zubritskiy assisted him with life support duties and replaced dust filters in the ventilation system.
