Fans Slam The Alters Over Undisclosed Gen AI Use in Game

Fans of the game The Alters have expressed outrage and disappointment after discovering evidence of undisclosed use of large language models (LLMs) in subtitles and flavor text. The developer, 11 Bit Studios, has not made any public disclosure about using AI tools despite a requirement from Valve to do so as part of the Steam Distribution Agreement.

Players pointed out that some examples show AI-generated content without proper disclaimer on the game’s Steam page. This lack of transparency is seen as unacceptable by many players who feel they have the right to know what they’re buying.

However, not all fans share the same opinion. Some think that the issues with translations and subtitles may be due to human error or inadequate testing, rather than AI use.

Game localization specialist Lucile Danilov expressed her disappointment, stating that leaving parts of an AI prompt in the game was a “disgrace.” Handong Ryu, who handled the Korean translation for the game, also confirmed that similar issues exist in the Korean version, suggesting that the studio may have been more carelessness-driven than intentional.

The incident highlights the ongoing debate about transparency and disclosure in game development, particularly when it comes to the use of AI tools. While some developers praise AI’s potential, others express concerns about its impact on player experience and the industry as a whole.
