Ukraine is set to leave the anti-landmine Ottawa Convention, following a decision signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday. The move comes as Russia intensifies its offensive operations in Ukraine, seizing more territory and exploiting its significant advantage in manpower.
Zelenskyy has called for increased sanctions against Russia, urging the international community to take action. He recently signed a deal to align Ukraine’s sanctions regime with that of its international allies, including the EU and G7 nations.
The decision to quit the convention must be ratified by the Ukrainian parliament and communicated to the United Nations before going into effect. This move follows similar steps taken by the Baltic States and Poland.
Russia has launched a massive air attack on Ukraine, targeting central, southern, and western regions. At least three people were injured, and reports of damaged houses and infrastructure have surfaced.
Ukraine’s military has confirmed that one pilot was killed and his F-16 fighter jet lost in overnight Russian strikes. This is the third loss of an F-16 fighter jet since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
The international community remains divided on how to address the conflict, with Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warning against underestimating Russia. The US has also made a recent phone call with Putin, but no further details have been provided.
