Mamdani Defends Democratic Socialism Amid Democratic Unease Over NYC Mayoral Race

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has defended his democratic socialism, arguing that it will focus on economic issues and help the city’s working residents. Despite some top Democrats being hesitant to endorse him, Mamdani believes his agenda, which includes raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations to fund policies like free buses and a $30 minimum hourly wage, is necessary.

Mamdani’s victory over former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo in Tuesday’s primary election has raised concerns about how he might fit into the party’s messaging ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Business leaders have also expressed concern about his policies. However, Mamdani says that economic issues should be a priority for the party.

Some Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have declined to endorse Mamdani yet, citing a need for more information about his vision. Trump has threatened to cut off funding to New York if Mamdani wins and doesn’t “do the right thing.”

Mamdani denies being antisemitic and defends his stance on pro-Palestinian phrases, arguing that they are not language he uses and that others should clarify their own positions. He also believes that those who target pro-Palestinian activists for their speech are guilty of bigotry.

The Republican nominee in the November election is Curtis Sliwa, while incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent after corruption charges against him were dropped. A majority of American Democrats believe their party needs new leadership and a focus on economic issues.
