Thousands Attend Record-Breaking San Francisco Trans March

San Francisco’s 21st annual Trans March kicked off Pride weekend on Friday, featuring an estimated 20,000 participants and drawing a record crowd. The event’s slogan “Living History, Building Futures” highlighted the importance of liberation for all amid ongoing attacks against trans rights.

LGBTQ+ individuals and allies from diverse backgrounds attended the march, including straight people like Paci Hammond, who commuted from Berkeley to show support. Hammond held a handmade sign that read “Transgender rights are human rights. Support and defend them.”

The march coincided with an escalation of anti-trans measures in the US, including recent court decisions on gender-affirming care for youth and Trump’s executive orders banning trans women and girls from sports and recognizing only two biological sexes.

Organizers described Trans March as “an act of resistance” aimed at drawing connections between struggles faced by oppressed communities. The event featured vendors selling black t-shirts with anti-Trump slogans, chants calling for social justice and human rights, and the giant trans pride flag.

Prior to the march, married couple Breath Mormorer and Dakota Rose Austin displayed their art piece – a trans pride-colored lobster sculpture – near the Dolores Park Liberty Bell. They emphasized the importance of visibility, protest, and fighting for the trans community’s rights.

The Trans March was part of a broader wave of resistance against anti-LGBTQ+ policies, including protests against anti-trans policies in local saunas and efforts to “liberate” historic sites like Compton’s Cafeteria. The building became a federal landmark in January and is expected to be returned to the trans community through further protests.
