The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating free agent guard Malik Beasley over alleged gambling activities. However, no formal charges have been filed and Beasley maintains his innocence.
Beasley, who spent last season with the Detroit Pistons, is a person of interest in the investigation but has not been charged. His lawyer, Steve Haney, stated that the investigation is ongoing and that no accusations have been made against Beasley.
The investigation was first reported by ESPN and appears to be unrelated to a recent case involving Toronto Raptors guard Jontay Porter, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in exchange for his role in an alleged sports betting scheme. Beasley is expected to become an unrestricted free agent soon, as teams can begin negotiating with players set to hit the market after the postseason.
Beasley has previously played nine seasons in the NBA, averaging 11.7 points per game. He was a key contributor to the Pistons last season, making a career-high 319 three-pointers on 41.6% shooting.
