Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new organization focused on developing superintelligence, a key aspect of artificial intelligence (AI). The lab will be led by top executives, including Scale AI’s former CEO Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.
The announcement comes as Meta faces increased competition in the AI field from rivals such as OpenAI and Google. Zuckerberg has been actively recruiting top talent to lead his company’s AI efforts, offering signing bonuses of up to $100 million to attract researchers.
MSL will house various teams working on foundation models, including the open-source Llama software, products, and Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research projects. The lab aims to develop the next generation of Meta AI models, which power the company’s apps and technology used by over 1 billion monthly active users.
Zuckerberg believes that Meta is uniquely positioned to deliver superintelligence due to its strong business, experience in building successful products, and pioneering work in AI glasses and wearables. The new talent influx and parallel approach to model development are expected to set the company up for success in achieving personal superintelligence for everyone.
The formation of MSL marks a significant shift in Meta’s AI strategy, as the company continues to invest heavily in its research efforts and compete with other major players in the field.
