BIS Releases 2025 Annual Economic Report, Warns of Uncertainty and Disruptions

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has released its Annual Economic Report for 2025, cautioning that global economic growth is threatened by trade disruptions and policy uncertainty. The report, which assesses the state of the global economy and discusses key policy challenges, was released at a meeting on June 29, 2025.

According to Agustín Carstens and Hyun Song Shin, authors of the report, the current uncertain economic environment requires policymakers to prioritize sound public finances and price stability for sustainable growth. The BIS also highlights the interconnectedness of financial markets since the Great Financial Crisis, emphasizing the need for a more coordinated approach to monetary and financial policy.

The report proposes tokenised platforms as a potential foundation for the next-generation monetary and financial system, which could utilize central bank reserves, commercial bank money, and government bonds. This innovative approach aims to enhance financial stability and facilitate more efficient use of resources. The BIS Annual Economic Report 2025 provides valuable insights into the pressing issues facing global economies, emphasizing the need for proactive policy responses to mitigate uncertainty and promote sustainable growth.
