Director Hwang, who created the hit Netflix series Squid Game, hasn’t confirmed any plans for a spin-off but expressed interest in working with acclaimed directors like David Fincher. In an interview with THR, Hwang revealed his desire to tackle issues of late capitalism and competition through a hypothetical American adaptation.
While writing Squid Game, Hwang considered introducing a female recruiter as a powerful contrast, which led him to Cate Blanchett. However, he emphasized that the character was not intended to set up a spin-off, but rather serve as an impactful ending to the show.
Hwang’s bleak outlook on the world is reflected in Squid Game, and he believes the series highlights the system’s strength and resistance to change. He hopes the show will inspire viewers to continue fighting against the status quo, mirroring Gi-hun’s hopeful narrative of sacrifice leading to transformation.
