Warren Buffett Donates $6 Billion to Charity and Family Foundations

Warren Buffett made a massive donation of 12.36 million Berkshire Class B shares to the Gates Foundation, his family charities, and four other foundations on Friday. This marks his largest annual gift since he started giving away his fortune nearly two decades ago.

The donation boosts Buffett’s overall charitable giving to over $60 billion. He gave 9.43 million shares to the Gates Foundation, while donating smaller amounts to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, Sherwood Foundation, and NoVo Foundation.

Despite donating billions, Buffett still owns 13.8% of Berkshire Hathaway’s stock, worth $152 billion before the latest donation. His decision not to sell any shares was reaffirmed in a statement, as he previously mentioned that donations to the Gates Foundation would end when he passes away.

Buffett began giving away his fortune in 2006 and has since increased his charitable donations significantly. Last year, he changed his will, designating 99.5% of his remaining fortune to a charitable trust overseen by his children, who will have about a decade to distribute the money.
