Golden State Warriors restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga is expected to explore the market when free agency opens at 3 p.m. PT on Monday, despite some preliminary discussions with the team. The Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls are among the most likely outside suitors for Kuminga’s services.
The Heat gained flexibility after Duncan Robinson opted out of his expiring contract, which could link to Kuminga’s situation if the market develops in Miami’s favor. Multi-player sign-and-trades have become more common due to the new CBA and apron rules.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy is seeking a resolution with Kuminga “sooner rather than later,” but the dynamics make a quick agreement unlikely. The Warriors’ front office will be in Los Angeles, where they pursued De’Anthony Melton last summer and are expected to recruit veteran help on Monday. A stretch center is considered a priority target, with Al Horford being linked as a preferred choice.
If the Warriors use the taxpayer midlevel exception (projected at $5.7 million) on Horford or another free agent, they’ll be hard-capped at the second apron, currently projected at $207.8 million. Kuminga’s qualifying offer is $7.9 million, but his cap hold is $22.9 million, adding to the Warriors’ financial burden if his situation drags on into July.
