UN Report Names US Giants Complicit in Israel’s ‘Genocide’

The United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory has released a report naming 48 corporate actors, including US giants Microsoft, Alphabet Inc. (Google), and Amazon, as complicit in Israel’s occupation and war on Gaza.

The report lists companies from multiple countries, including China, Mexico, Italy, Japan, and Switzerland, which provide arms, technology, and infrastructure to support Israel’s military operations and occupation of Palestinian territory.

Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon grant Israel “virtually government-wide access” to their cloud and AI technologies, enhancing its data processing and surveillance capacities. US software platform Palantir Technologies expanded its support to the Israeli military since October 2023, according to the report.

The UN report states that colonial endeavours and their associated genocides have historically been driven by corporate entities, which profit from an illegal occupation. Foreign arms companies have seen a surge in profits since Israel launched its war on Gaza, while global insurance companies invested large sums in shares and bonds linked to Israel’s occupation.

The report calls on companies to divest from all activities linked to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, which is illegal under international law. The International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion ruling that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem should come to an end “as rapidly as possible”.

The UN rapporteur emphasizes that corporate entities are under an obligation to avoid violating human rights through direct action or in their business partnerships, and may be held criminally liable for failure to act in line with international law.
