Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new division focused on developing superintelligent AI systems. Co-led by Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman, MSL will aim to build personal AI that is deeply integrated into how people interact with technology. This move comes as Meta ramps up its focus on AI, competing with companies like OpenAI and Google in the quest for advanced AI systems.
Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta’s AI efforts will prioritize building systems that are not only capable of human-level intelligence but also “personal,” integrating AI into everyday life. The announcement marks a significant push by Meta to invest heavily in AI research and development, with investments totaling $14.3 billion in Alexandr Wang’s data-labeling startup, Scale AI.
MSL will be led by Wang, who joined Meta earlier this month after Scale AI received the investment. Friedman, former GitHub CEO, will partner with Wang to co-lead MSL’s research and product initiatives. The new lab will bring together top talent from rival labs, including Trapit Bansal, Shuchao Bi, Huiwen Chang, Ji Lin, Joel Pobar, Hongyu Ren, Johan Schalkwyk, Pei Sun, Jiahui Yu, and Shengjia Zhao.
Meta’s superintelligence ambitions aim to make AI accessible to everyone, leveraging its unique business structure and product reach. The company has already made significant investments in infrastructure and hired top researchers from rival labs. With this new initiative, Meta aims to establish itself as a leader in the development of personal superintelligence systems.
