Fortnite Creator to Pay $520 Million to Resolve FTC Allegations Over In-Game Purchases

Epic Games, the company behind popular video game Fortnite, has agreed to pay a total of $520 million to resolve allegations that it unlawfully charged players for unwanted in-game purchases. The settlement benefits Fortnite players who were charged between January 2017 and September 2022.

Players can receive refunds for unauthorized purchases, unwanted items, or other charges, depending on the number of claims filed. Refunds will be distributed via check or PayPal payment, with specific deadlines for each method. Epic Games must also implement policy changes to prevent future violations.

The settlement is the second round of payments in a class-action lawsuit that started in 2019. The company faces civil penalties and will make $245 million in cash refunds to players. The remaining $275 million will go towards civil penalties.

Fortnite players can file claims until July 9, 2025, with eligible individuals receiving refunds by February 14, 2025. Additional payments are expected in 2026 after all claims have been reviewed and validated.
