Britain’s worst serial child killer, 35-year-old nurse Lucy Letby, is serving life in jail for murdering seven newborns and attempting to murder eight more between June 2015 and June 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Now, three senior hospital managers have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter as part of an investigation into Letby’s crimes.
Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes leading the probe said the arrests do not affect Letby’s convictions but added that both corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter elements of the investigation are ongoing. Police are still looking into whether Letby committed more crimes at this hospital or another unit where she worked.
Since her conviction, lawmakers, medical experts, and others have questioned the prosecution evidence, with the Criminal Cases Review Commission considering an application to review Letby’s case. The hospital’s senior managers strongly denied accusations that they protected a murderer, citing alternative explanations for the deaths that needed to be considered. The findings of a public inquiry examining how the murders took place are due to be published early next year.
