Fasting Diet Shows Promise in Managing Type 2 Diabetes

A new study published recently demonstrates the effectiveness of a 5-day fasting-mimicking diet in managing type 2 diabetes. The research, conducted using real-world evidence, shows that individuals with type 2 diabetes who follow this diet exhibit improvements in blood glucose levels, weight loss, and reduced reliance on diabetes medications.

The study involved patients enrolled in a diabetes management program that followed a monthly 5-day fasting-mimicking diet under the supervision of physicians and registered dietitians. Data from these patients showed significant reductions in glycated hemoglobin levels and improvements in blood glucose control. Additionally, the treatment helped participants achieve weight loss and reduced their reliance on medications.

The researchers used a patented low-calorie, plant-based diet that is rich in healthy unsaturated fats and fiber. This approach was designed to mimic the beneficial health effects of water-only fasting without the need for complete calorie restriction during short periods.

While the findings are promising, experts caution that certain conditions may make this treatment less suitable. Patients should consult a physician before starting such a diet, especially those with coexisting health conditions or frailty.

According to Dr. William Hsu, one of the study authors and an endocrinologist, “The fasting-mimicking diet can be safely implemented in real-world clinical settings when combined with physician oversight and registered dietitian coaching.”
