UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham Extends Contract for New Role

UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham has agreed to a two-year contract extension, keeping him in his current role until July 2026. After that, he will become the Senior Advisor to Chancellor Lee H. Roberts and take on new responsibilities focused on transformational university projects.

Cunningham praised the opportunity to extend his contract, saying he’s excited for the future. “I am looking forward to continuing to support our student-athletes, coaches, and staff as we navigate the changing athletics landscape,” he stated.

As part of this change, UNC has hired Steve Newmark, president of Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, as Executive Associate Athletic Director, effective August 15. Newmark will succeed Cunningham as athletic director in 2026. A native Chapel Hill resident with a background in law and college athletics, Newmark is eager to join the Tar Heel Nation. “I look forward to working with Bubba and the entire fanbase to continue elevating UNC’s status as a premier brand,” he said.

Cunningham, who has led Carolina Athletics since 2011, is credited with helping eight programs win 24 NCAA championships during his tenure. Chancellor Roberts praised Cunningham’s vision and dedication, saying they’re excited to build on his success by incorporating Newmark’s expertise in strategic partnerships and sponsorships.
