Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 25H2 is almost here for Windows Insiders. However, this year’s annual feature update won’t be a complete refresh like previous years. Instead, it will build upon the same source code as Windows 11 24H2 with additional features enabled via an enablement package.
Unlike fans hoping for a new version of Windows 12 to ease the pain of Windows 11 24H2, this update brings few significant changes. Microsoft Principal Project Manager Jason Leznek stated that Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 share the same source code with only additional features turned on, ensuring minimal impact on compatibility.
However, users can still test and focus on new features rather than a full complement of OS, application, or device compatibilities. Microsoft has acknowledged testing issues since the release of Windows 11 24H2 in 2024, but having the same code base means existing problems won’t be addressed in this update.
The main improvements in Windows 11 25H2 include a revamped Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) replacement screen, a “black unexpected restart” display with visible stop error codes at the bottom. Additionally, Microsoft is adding tools for antivirus and endpoint protection vendors to run their software in user mode outside the Windows kernel.
These changes will be rolled out on Windows 11 24H2 devices this summer, while the new endpoint security platform will arrive in private preview in July.
