A Guernsey islander, Megan Chapple, has expressed concerns that her home island could do more to promote a better sun-safe culture. Moving to Australia last year and a half ago, Ms. Chapple found that sun protection had become second nature in her new country.
In contrast, Ms. Chapple recalled not giving much thought to wearing sunscreen while living in Guernsey, where she now thinks differently after having access to free sunscreen at beach hotspots and tax-free deductions for suncream. The Australian government actively promotes sun safety through campaigns and awareness programs.
Other islanders also shared their thoughts on the matter. Joey Barling stated that her increased sun consciousness was due to community and media awareness, but believed Guernsey could boost awareness further. Hilda, on the other hand, uses sunscreen daily, even in winter, following a doctor’s advice. Keith Mansell disagreed, stating that people should make their own choices regarding sun protection.
The BBC has launched a Sun Safety Campaign, aiming to educate islanders about early detection and prevention of skin cancers during the summer months. The campaign will feature expert insights on the importance of sun safety.
