Blumhouse Productions boss Jason Blum has explained why his horror sequel M3GAN 2.0 underperformed at the box office. The film, released in June, made $17 million globally during its opening weekend, a significant drop from the first movie’s $45 million.
According to Blum, the issue was that the studio “overthought” how audiences would respond to the sequel. He likened M3GAN 2.0 to Superman, suggesting that they could change genres and tone without affecting its popularity. However, this approach led to a mismatch between the film’s sci-fi actioner style and audience expectations.
Blum warned that every sequel walks a fine line between staying true to the original and innovating enough to attract new fans. He stated that if a sequel is too similar, it may be seen as a waste of time, while making it too different can alienate existing fans.
M3GAN 2.0’s poor performance has raised questions about how to balance creative vision with audience expectations in horror sequels.
