Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming and head of Xbox, is not expected to retire anytime soon, according to Microsoft officials. The statement comes as rumors of Spencer’s retirement have circulated online amidst the company’s major layoffs.
Spencer has led Microsoft’s Xbox efforts since 2014 and has overseen several significant initiatives, including the launch of the Xbox Series X/S and a major push into Xbox Game Pass. However, the company did not address the rumor fully in its statement.
Separately, Frank Shaw, Microsoft’s communications chief, claimed that at least part of the rumor was made up. Meanwhile, layoffs have affected multiple Xbox studios, including Perfect Dark and Everwild, which were cancelled, and Turn 10 Studios, which is letting go of over 70 employees. Zenimax Online Studios also reportedly cancelled a new MMORPG codenamed Blackbird.
Spencer’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Microsoft’s gaming strategy, but the company’s ongoing restructuring efforts have raised concerns about the future of Xbox.
