Guernsey Urges Sun Safety for All Ages

Guernsey’s sun safety work is “imperative” according to a charity, Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG). The organization has sponsored suncream at over 25 locations across the island, including schools and events.

MUG aims to raise awareness of early detection and prevention of skin cancer in young people. Tony Tostevin from MUG said that educating youngsters on what to look for is crucial.

Several schools, including Vale Primary School and St Sampson’s High School, have implemented sun safety initiatives. The schools provide free suncream to students during breaks and lessons, as well as promoting policies such as compulsory hats in the shade.

The Channel Islands Coop also sponsors suncream for school trips and additional bottles for lessons. The charity emphasizes that protecting the community is essential, especially on the island.

According to MUG, the work is making a difference. Students are applying suncream before attending school and topping it up throughout the day. Pupils have received education on when UV levels are three or above, they should wear sunscreen and hats.

The States of Guernsey’s Sun Safe Policy serves as the minimum expectation for schools. However, some schools have implemented their own policies which complement and build upon the guidelines. The charity hopes to increase sun safety measures at secondary school level.
