Gaza Doctor Killed in Israeli Airstrike Amid Growing Healthcare Crisis

A doctor at an Indonesian hospital in Gaza City was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday, according to his family and the Gaza Health Ministry. The medical professional, Dr. Marwan Sultan, was part of a group that included his wife, sister, daughter, and son-in-law when the missile hit their apartment.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed it struck a key Hamas terrorist during an operation in Gaza City but acknowledged any harm to civilians would be reviewed. The Israeli military regrets any harm caused to uninvolved individuals.

Medical Aid for Palestinians condemned Dr. Sultan’s death, calling him a dedicated medical professional who worked under dire conditions. The number of healthcare workers killed in Gaza has reached at least 1,580 since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.

The Indonesian Hospital was forced to close after repeated Israeli attacks and sustained damage. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that there are no functioning hospitals left in northern Gaza, with the health system across the strip “collapsing.”

In response to Dr. Sultan’s death, the International Committee for the Red Cross urged protection of medical personnel and facilities, stating they must be respected and protected to safeguard a lifeline for the wounded and sick.

Gaza has reported over 57,000 deaths since the start of the war, with 118 Palestinians killed in the last 24 hours. The conflict was triggered by a Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages.
