Razor Blade Throat COVID-19 Variant on the Rise

A new variant of COVID-19, dubbed “Razor Blade Throat,” is causing concern among local doctors. The term refers to a symptom of a sore throat, but it’s not as severe as initially thought. This latest strain accounts for 43% of all COVID-19 cases nationwide.

According to Dr. Jacob Wood of Baton Rouge General Hospital, the typical symptoms are similar to those of a cold or flu – runny nose, congestion, shortness of breath, cough, and body aches. However, having a fever could indicate something more serious.

While the new variant is spreading rapidly, experts stress that not everyone with a bad sore throat has it. Dr. Wood advises getting checked out if you experience a fever, as other possibilities like strep or flu exist.

To stay healthy this summer, follow Dr. Wood’s tips: wash your hands regularly, avoid others who might be sick, and drink plenty of fluids.
