Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest to Attract Record Crowd

The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is set to draw thousands of spectators to the Coney Island boardwalk on July 4th, with an expected attendance surpassing previous years. Joey Chestnut, a 16-time champion, will return after being banned in 2024, fueling excitement among fans.

Coney Island has seen significant growth since Hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact in 2012 and the pandemic-induced shutdowns in 2020. The area’s businesses are eagerly anticipating the sharp increase in foot traffic on the busiest day of the year, with many reporting record-breaking numbers.

Minor-league baseball team Brooklyn Cyclones’ vice president Steve Cohen predicts a massive turnout, citing the event’s historical draw and Joey Chestnut’s return. Gledys Ramirez, a Vicky’s Food & Treats manager, expresses concerns about business, but overall, Coney Island is poised for an economic boost on July 4th.

The contest has become a major tourist attraction, with ESPN broadcasting it to nearly 2 million viewers in previous years. This year’s event is expected to bring significant revenue for local businesses, including Ruby’s Bar & Grill, which expects “an excessive amount of people” if the weather permits. Childs Restaurant and the New York Aquarium have also benefited from increased tourism since their reopenings.

While some industries have seen growth, such as healthcare jobs, others like leisure and hospitality have experienced decline. However, Coney Island has seen a notable increase in businesses with fewer than five employees, signaling potential economic revitalization.

Good weather is crucial for the event’s success, and Cohen says he anticipates a huge turnout, thanks to Joey Chestnut’s return and the Cyclones’ game that night.
