BBC Apologizes After Bob Vylan’s Antisemitic Performance at Glastonbury

The BBC has issued a formal apology after allowing a “high risk” act to perform live at Glastonbury, despite internal warnings about potential controversy. The performance by Bob Vylan aired on the broadcaster’s platforms and contained antisemitic content that was deemed “offensive and deplorable.” Director-general Tim Davie apologized for the incident, stating the BBC will not tolerate antisemitism.

The BBC had classified Bob Vylan as “high risk” following a risk assessment process applied to all Glastonbury acts. However, the broadcaster acknowledged critical failures in its compliance processes, including not delaying live streams to show warnings and ignoring escalated concerns from staff.

As a result of the incident, the BBC has made significant changes to its live streaming protocols for music events. High-risk performances will no longer be broadcast or streamed live, editorial support will be mandatory on-site at major music festivals, and more detailed guidance will be provided on when to withdraw live streams.

The controversy has led to concerns about accountability and the BBC’s commitment to inclusivity and tolerance. Director-general Tim Davie emphasized his organization’s dedication to being a role model for these values.
