Brent Burns Signs One-Year Deal with Colorado Avalanche

Brent Burns, the veteran defenseman, has agreed to a one-year free-agent contract with the Colorado Avalanche. The deal marks the end of an era for the 40-year-old, as he departs from his three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes and brings his impressive career full circle back to the Avalanche.

Burns spent 11 years with the San Jose Sharks, winning the Norris Trophy in 2017, before joining the Hurricanes in 2022. During his time with the ‘Canes, he recorded six goals and 23 assists this season and added four more points in the playoffs. The veteran defenseman also boasts an impressive physical presence, leading the league in consecutive games played with 925 appearances.

While Burns is no longer in his prime, his durability remains a valuable asset for the Avalanche. He averaged 20:57 of ice time last season and can still contribute as a right-handed shot who excels at delivering pucks to the net. This one-year deal gives both parties an opportunity to assess Burns’ current abilities before deciding on long-term plans.

Burns has spent his entire 21-season career with Minnesota, San Jose, and Carolina, accumulating 261 goals, 641 assists, and 910 points. His impressive resume includes a Norris Trophy win, runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2016, and a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2016.
