Nvidia has unveiled its latest gaming GPU, dubbed the 5090D V2, just days before its scheduled release in China. The card is a variant of the existing RTX 5090, designed to circumvent US export restrictions on the region.
The 5090D V2 boasts the same GB202 graphics chip and 21760 CUDA cores as its predecessor but with reduced VRAM from 32GB to 24GB, and a narrower memory bus. Despite these specs, the card maintains a high thermal design power (TDP) of 575W, making it comparable to the original RTX 5090.
The new name, however, has raised eyebrows among tech enthusiasts, with some questioning Nvidia’s branding strategy. The move is seen as an attempt by the company to adapt to China’s evolving trade policies and maintain its presence in the lucrative market.
Nvidia has a history of releasing specialized GPUs for China, including the RTX 5090D, which was introduced in response to US export restrictions. While the company faces stiff competition from AMD in other markets, it seems determined to stay ahead in China by continuously introducing new variants of its flagship GPUs.
