Tesla’s Cybertruck, a premium electric vehicle touted by CEO Elon Musk as a visionary product, is struggling to gain traction in the market. Despite its record-breaking deliveries of 384,000 vehicles worldwide between April and June this year, which represents a 13.5% decline from last year, the company’s sales figures for specific models are opaque.
The Cybertruck is one of Tesla’s premium models, but it doesn’t break out separate sales numbers, only disclosing two categories: Model 3 and Y, and “other models,” which primarily consists of the legacy Model S sedan, Model X SUV, and Cybertruck. In the second quarter, Tesla delivered around 10,400 “other” models, a 52% decline from last year.
While Tesla doesn’t disclose exact sales figures for the Cybertruck, estimates suggest it may have sold around 5,000-6,000 units in the second quarter. The vehicle’s high price tag, limited range, and design issues have contributed to its poor performance. Additionally, the lack of range extender, recalls, and its association with the MAGA right-wing movement have further hindered sales.
Tesla’s struggles are part of a broader industry trend, with Chinese rivals like BYD eating into Tesla’s market share in key markets overseas. The company is on the verge of losing its title as the world’s largest EV maker by annual sales to BYD, which has sold over 1 million electric vehicles this year alone.
Despite the challenges, Tesla’s stock remains up nearly 300% over the last five years, largely due to Musk’s past promises and predictions. However, his recent MAGA turn has impacted the company’s core business, and it remains to be seen how this will affect its long-term prospects.
