Soccer World Mourns Deaths of Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and Portugal Brother

Liverpool and Portugal soccer star Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain at the age of 28. His brother, André Silva, also died in the accident. The brothers were in a Lamborghini when the vehicle left the road and caught fire.

Police are investigating the cause, which they say may be related to speeding. The bodies were identified by documents found at the scene and confirmed through forensic testing. The players’ family was present on Thursday afternoon to finalize the administrative requirements needed for the remains to be released and returned to Portugal.

Jota played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League win just over two months ago, scoring 65 goals across five years with the team. He also represented Portugal in the Nations League, winning the competition in both 2019 and this year.

The soccer world has paid tribute to Jota and his brother, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jürgen Klopp, and Arne Slot. LeBron James and Prince William have also expressed their condolences.

A wake for the brothers is set to begin on Friday morning at a church in Gondomar, Portugal, followed by a funeral on Saturday.
