Cattle producers are facing unprecedented expenses, but not due to high demand for beef. The cost of essential farming inputs like pesticides and fertilizers has surged, with some inputs costing up to 35% more than usual.
Despite the challenges, the current high demand for cattle is driving up prices for consumers. The Virginia Cooperative Commission reports that the cattle supply is at its lowest in a decade, with 2014 being the last time it reached this level.
Grocery stores are feeling the impact, but some are taking steps to mitigate the price increase. Piggly Wiggly, for example, absorbs some of the cost and buys local to keep prices low. For consumers, the Fourth of July may bring a noticeable difference in beef prices depending on where their local grocery store sources its supply.
Local farmer Hunter Johnson attributes the rising expenses to the increased costs of necessary inputs. “We can’t save on everything,” he said. “There are just too many essential expenses that we have to face.”
