A massive chunk of Mars has been discovered in Niger and is set to be sold at a Sotheby’s auction later this month. Weighing 24.67 kilograms, the meteorite named NWA-16788 is about 70% larger than the previous record-holder found in Mali in 2021. The rock shows minimal weathering, indicating it has remained unchanged since its arrival in the Sahara Desert.
Scientists debate whether the rare specimen should be sold or remain in a museum for study and public display. Paleontologist Steve Brusatte suggests it belongs in a museum to be studied by children and families, while planetary scientist Julia Cartwright argues that its scientific value will remain with its new owner. The auction is scheduled for July 16 at 14:00 UTC.
