Meta has announced the global expansion of Threads DMs, giving all users their own Threads-specific inbox for private chats. The feature will allow users to message connections in a dedicated, threads-only private chat.
To ensure safety, Meta is initially only allowing DMs between followers or mutual followers from Instagram who are 18 and older. The messaging system is protected by robust privacy standards and safety infrastructure.
As requested by users, the feature has been added to provide easier conversation continuation and deeper relationships on Threads. However, this expansion comes after Meta’s integration efforts of its existing DM options into a singular back-end flow.
While Meta hasn’t updated its integration plans for some time, it may be related to an ongoing court case against the FTC. Nevertheless, the addition of Threads DMs marks another step towards making the app more independent from Instagram and building it into its own platform.
The feature is rolling out globally today, with additional updates expected, including messaging controls and inbox filters to help manage key interactions and spam messages.
