Wisconsin consumers are facing higher prices for summer cookouts this year due to increased costs for meat items. A recent survey by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau found that a meal for 10 people cost $69.03, a 4% increase from last year.
The average cost of ground beef in Wisconsin stores has jumped nearly 7% to $11.85 per 2 pounds, outpacing the national survey’s 4% increase. Beef prices have hit a record high in May and are expected to remain elevated due to a short supply of cattle across the country.
Agricultural economics professor Brenda Boetel attributes the surge in beef prices to struggling feeders who have improved their profitability despite lower numbers of beef cattle in the US. However, it takes time for producers to rebuild herds, leading to tighter supplies initially.
Despite higher prices, consumer demand for beef remains strong, especially during the summer grilling season. Consumers tend to be more willing to pay a premium when they feel financially secure.
The survey also found that pork and chicken prices have increased in Wisconsin, with pork chops up 4% and chicken breasts over $1 more expensive than last year. However, national averages suggest that these prices are starting to come down. Overall, the total cost of a summer cookout in Wisconsin is now 19% higher than it was five years ago.
